This guide is intended for those personnel that will be standing duty at the Navigation Console (NC) and line officers that may be required to command a Navigation Station. This guide pertains to the Navigation Station ONLY. Any references to procedures or operations of other bridge stations is for clarity, and the appropriate SOP should be referenced for that stations correct procedures for the operation being conducted. Navigation Station Responsibilities The Navigation Station is one of the most important manned stations aboard a starship, second only to Engineering (no power, no need for a Navigation Officer). Being given the privilege to man a Navigation Station is a sign of both trust and confidence, not only by the Commanding Officer, but by the ships entire crew. When you assume the role of Navigation Officer, the life of every crew member aboard, as well as the lives of those on ships in your vicinity, are in YOUR hands. This point cannot be stressed enough. StarFleet (This section should be found in StarFleet regulations somewhere.) Commanding Officer As a Navigation Officer aboard the USS Federation, you are required to follow all reasonable orders issued by the Bridge Officer. You have the right to question the orders issued by the Bridge Officer if it is in direct violation of a StarFleet regulation or order issued by a higher ranking officer. (Captain should add any orders here) (First Officer should add any orders here) (Navigation Officer should add any orders here) Crew As a Navigation Officer aboard a StarFleet vessel, you are responsible for the lives of every crew member and passage aboard your vessel while you are manning the Navigation Station and are NOT docked or moored. Standard Operation Procedures Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) are defined to be those procedures authorized for use while the ship is under normal operating guide lines (i.e. not at Yellow or Red alert, or a state of emergency has been ordered). Assuming the Navigation Station When reporting for duty at the Navigation Station, report first to the Bridge Officer (if not on the bridge, report to the highest ranking officer currently on the bridge). You should be briefed by the officer you are relieving of any situations that may effect navigation. This includes console and ship systems status, contacts and standing bridge orders. After informing the Bridge Officer that you are reporting for duty and you have been briefed by the Navigation Officer you are relieving, you should man the Navigation Console and complete the following check list. 1) BEFORE reporting for duty, you should review the Navigation Log for information such as changes to defined waypoints and special orders. 2) Check the 'nav status' and the 'nav specs' to ensure the console is powered and not damaged. Note the status of the shields and power level, current course, speed and destination. 3) If NOT docked, perform a 'nav passive' scan and note locations of contacts. Perform a 'nav passive
